It was the night before my first tutoring session. All I had in
mind was what and how I wanted to present myself to my first writer. I wanted
to look presentable. I wanted to look awake and show that I was there for my
writer. The day had arrived and all I kept thinking was what I was going to
say. Fortunately, my writer greeted me with a smile, and I felt at ease for the
first couple of minutes. She told me about her paper and said she had a problem
with run-on sentences. As we read her paper, she giggled, and I asked her what
was so funny. She told me that as I was reading out loud her paper, she noticed
how long her sentences were. As we worked through her paper, we both offered
suggestions on how we could combine sentences or omit. I was very jubilant to
hear that I did help her and that she felt more confident about her paper. My
goal of this first tutoring session was to establish not only confidence in my
writer, but as well as in me. I wanted to feel secure and confident that I was
capable of helping others in their college writing.
